The house's grand 1774 bedroom: high ceiling, original fireplace, a four-poster and family portraits.
When the wool merchant Thomas Hale refaced the house in 1774, this was the room he built for himself, and it still has the proportions to show it: a ceiling over three metres high, the original marble fireplace, panelled shutters and two tall windows over the front lawn. A mahogany four-poster, a pair of wing chairs by the fire and portraits that came with the house set the tone. The bathroom is new and generous, with a freestanding bath, brass fittings and a separate shower. In winter we lay the fire before you come up from dinner.
