Afternoon tea by the drawing room fire

Scones still warm from the range, sandwiches cut to order and loose-leaf tea: how we serve afternoon tea at Thornbury.

Afternoon tea by the drawing room fire

Afternoon tea is served every day from three until five in the Drawing Room, by the fire in winter and with the doors open to the lawn in summer.

The scones are baked that afternoon and come out with clotted cream and strawberry jam made from the kitchen garden's fruit. Sandwiches are cut to order (cucumber and mint, egg and cress, smoked salmon, ham with mustard) and the cake stand changes with the season.

Tea is £34 a person and is best ordered by noon. Add a glass of English sparkling wine from a Gloucestershire vineyard if the occasion calls for one. Tea guests who are not staying are welcome by arrangement.
