Thornbury Manor

A house with a long memory

A house with a long memory

Thornbury Manor is a gabled house of honey-coloured Cotswold stone on the lane above Chipping Campden. It was begun in the 1630s, and in 1774 a wool merchant named Thomas Hale gave it the sash windows, the staircase and the grand front bedroom it still has. Today it is a bed & breakfast of six rooms, kept by one family, with a walled garden, an orchard and open fires lit from October to April.

Breakfast is why many guests come back. It is cooked to order and served in the panelled Breakfast Room until half past ten: eggs from our own hens, Gloucester Old Spot sausages and dry-cured bacon from a farm in the next valley, oak-smoked kippers, buttermilk pancakes, and bread and marmalade made in the house.

The Cotswold Way passes the end of the drive, so you can walk to Broadway Tower and be back for afternoon tea by the drawing room fire. Ask the night before and we will pack you a picnic hamper for the hills.
